Las HijasMaria Quiroga
Big Ox Media; $24
Laura, Tanya, and Kris were born in Colombia, in the 1970s, and grew up in the U.S. Las Hijas (Maria Quiroga) explores these three adult adoptees’ feelings about family and adoption over a period of several years. The documentary includes the mothers’ reminiscences about the first moments they held their daughters, and snapshots of the girls growing up. But the heart of the film lies in Laura’s journey—the search that brings her back to Colombia to find her birth family, the ties that she develops with them, and her emerging identity. Although the experiences of these young women may not mirror the lives of international adoptees growing up today, the filmmaker set out to "tell what these three adoptees went through as children and are still going through as adults," and she accomplishes that vividly.
