Bullets On The BundBy Steve Whan
Steve Whan, a lifelong Hardy Boys fan, created the Autumn Jade mystery series so that his daughters, both adopted from China, could identify with the plucky Chinese-Canadian heroine and follow her exploits through many adventures. So far he has written and published two titles, with more to come.
Bullets on the Bund introduces twelve-year-old Autumn Jade, who juggles the usual preteen concerns about friendships and adolescent changes while also helping to crack a diamond-smuggling ring. Autumn’s adventures in her home province of British Columbia intertwine with dreams about 1930s Shanghai and involvement in an online support group for girls adopted from China.
Although the plots are farfetched and the characters lack depth (and sometimes credibility), the stories are intriguing and filled with details about China, dog training, martial arts, and Vancouver. Not yet widely available, the books may be purchased online at autumnjade.com or by mail order from Autumn Jade Publishing, 2730 Crescentview Dr., North Vancouver, B.C. V7R 2V1, Canada.
