Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World
Sat., Nov. 14-Nov., Aug. 15, American Museum of Natural History. showcases the goods, cultures, and technologies from four representative cities of the Silk Road: Xi’an, China’s Tang Dynasty Capital; Turfan, a verdant oasis; Samarkand, home of prosperous merchants; and ancient Baghdad, a hub of commerce and scholarship. Visitors will watch live silkworms spinning cocoons, wander through a replica of a night market, encounter life-sized camel models, explore the ancient skills of papermaking and metalwork, and track the “stars” using a working model of an Arab astrolabe. Children will collect special stamps in Silk Road “passports” issued to them at the exhibition entrance. On Sunday afternoons, guests will be treated to live performances brought together by the Silk Road Project.

Summer camp in the U.S. designed for Chinese-American (adopted and biological) teens ages 12-16, but older teens can join the camp program as peer counselors. Meet Chinese teens and teens living in China. Spend week #1 visiting the Eastern USA, including Washington, DC; Colonial Williamsburg, VA; Busch Gardens Amusement Park; Philadelphia, PA; Lancaster County's Amish; and New York City. Silk and Bamboo: Music and Art of China
Through Sun., Feb. 7, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Egyptian Special Exhibition Galleries, 1000 Fifth Ave. (at 82nd St.) An exhibition celebrating the diverse musical heritage of China. With about 60 objects drawn largely from the Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition features a wide variety of musical instruments and art, including a rare Ming dynasty ivory-covered pipa (lute) and lacquered qin (zither), bells from the 5th century B.C., and Han dynasty pottery in the shapes of dancers and musicians. The Museum will also offer a number of educational activities and performances.
