Adoption in the Age of Social Media

Within a few short years, social media has changed almost every aspect of adoption. Facebook and other social networking sites are now being used by hopeful parents, to connect with prospective birthmothers; families and birth families in open adoptions, to stay in contact; adoptees (and sometimes their parents), to search for birth family -- and vice versa.

We'd like to hear from families who have made use of social media sites along their adoption journeys -- particularly families in which the parents and/or the adopted children have stayed in contact with birth family via Facebook or a similar site. If this describes your family's experience, what are the pros and cons?
